A bank has a large base of current and savings account money to lend cheaply, plus access to the central bank for quick liquidity. An NBFC has neither. It borrows from banks, mutual funds, and bond investors and lends at higher rates, and the gap is its profit.

That funding difference is why NBFC bonds in India pay what they do. Around 8% to 10.5% is common on high-yield NBFC bonds [1], against roughly 6.8% on a five-year bank deposit [2]. The extra two to three points is the price of a thinner cushion. The useful question is which NBFC bonds are worth the extra and which are not.

Why NBFC Bonds Yield More Than Bank Deposits

Three structural facts explain the gap, and none is about how well the company is run. There is no deposit insurance. Bank deposits are covered by DICGC up to 5 lakh per depositor per bank. NBFC bonds carry no cover, and NBFCs sit outside the payment system [3].

There is no lender of last resort behind them. A bank under funding pressure can approach the central bank. An NBFC returns to the market, and markets close fastest exactly when a company most needs them open.

Funding is wholesale. An NBFC depends on banks and mutual funds continuing to lend to it, which works until sentiment turns.

None of this makes them bad. It gives them credit, priced accordingly. High-yield NBFC bonds are not a different product, only a lower-rated one.

Latest Bond Updates:

<a href="https://goldenpi.com/blog/bond-news/housing-finance-company-hfc-bonds/" aria-label="Housing Finance Company Bonds: Risk, Returns & IL&FS defaulted in 2018 and DHFL in 2019. Both carried AAA ratings when they did [4].

That is not an argument for ignoring ratings. A AAA issuer defaults far less often than an A-rated one, and the rating remains the best starting filter. But it is a point-in-time opinion, revisable faster than you can exit a thinly traded bond.

NBFC bond risk is a judgment about whether the company can keep refinancing itself, and the rating is one input rather than the answer.

Explore Bonds

High Yield Bonds | Corporate Bonds | Tax Free Bonds | Buy Bond Platform

The RBI Layer Behind NBFC Bonds That Most Investors Never Check

There is a second signal; it is free, and almost no retail investor uses it. Since October 2021, the RBI has placed every NBFC in one of four layers under its Scale-Based Regulation framework: Base, Middle, Upper, and Top. The higher the layer, the heavier the obligations [5].

An upper-layer NBFC must hold Common Equity Tier 1 capital of at least 9% of risk-weighted assets, list its shares, run a board-level risk committee, and meet a large exposure framework. A base-layer NBFC faces none of these [6].

In June 2026 the RBI simplified Upper Layer identification. Any NBFC with assets of 1 lakh crore or more now qualifies automatically, replacing the earlier scoring method, with the threshold reviewed every three years [7].

For anyone weighing an NBFC NCD investment, the layer is a second lens alongside the rating. Two issuers can share a rating and sit in different layers, and the Upper Layer one is watched far more closely.

How to Judge a Specific Issue

Rating and layer tell you about the company. Four things tell you about the specific issue on offer.

Secured or unsecured, which decides where you rank if things go wrong. A secured NCD carries a charge over the company’s assets and ranks ahead of unsecured lenders, lowering NBFC bond risk materially.

What the loan book contains. A gold loan NBFC lends short against collateral it can sell. A microfinance NBFC lends unsecured funds to borrowers with thin credit histories. Same label, very different NBFC bond risk.

The borrowing mix. Heavy reliance on short-term commercial paper to fund long-term loans preceded the trouble in 2018 and 2019 and is the clearest early sign of NBFC bond risk.

Rating outlook and recent movement. A negative outlook or a downgrade signals rising NBFC bond risk more than the letter itself.

NBFC Bonds Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What are NBFC bonds in India?
Debt instruments issued by non-banking financial companies to raise money for lending. Most come as NCDs, or non-convertible debentures, listed on the NSE or BSE, which is why an NBFC NCD investment and an NBFC bond usually mean the same thing. You lend, receive fixed interest, and get your principal back at maturity.

Q2. Are NBFC bonds safe to invest in?
They carry real credit risk and no deposit insurance. Safety depends on the issuer, not the category. A highly rated Upper Layer NBFC carries far less NBFC bond risk than a small unrated lender, even though both fall under the same heading.

Q3. What is the interest rate offered by NBFC bonds?
Roughly 7.4% to 8.5% at the top of the scale and 8.5% to 10.5% on high-yield NBFC bonds rated AA to A. The rate tracks the rating closely, so a yield well above its band usually signals something you have not yet found.

Q4. How can I invest in NBFC bonds in India?
Through a SEBI-registered online bond platform or a broker, using a demat account. Each listing shows the coupon, yield to maturity, rating, tenure, and issuer before you commit to an NBFC NCD investment. Most NBFC NCD investment routes start from 10,000 rupees, the SEBI face value from July 2024.

Q5. Which NBFC bonds offer the highest returns?
The lowest rated ones, by definition. High yield NBFC bonds pay more because the market judges default more likely. Rather than screening high-yield NBFC bonds for the biggest number, compare within a rating band and ask why one sits above its peers.

Conclusion

NBFC bonds pay more than bank deposits for a reason unconnected to any individual company. The funding model is thinner, the safety net absent, and the market prices thus.

Whether the extra is worth taking comes down to three checks, and only the first is widely used. The credit rating is a useful filter and a poor guarantee, as 2018 and 2019 showed. The regulatory layer is public and tells you how closely the issuer is supervised. And the loan book, since a secured short-tenure book behaves nothing like an unsecured long one.

Get those three right and an NBFC NCD investment becomes something you have priced rather than something you have accepted.

And spread any NBFC NCD investment across several issuers rather than one. The same yield then carries a fraction of the exposure to high-yield NBFC bonds.

Sources

Corporate and NBFC bond yields by rating band, AA to A (RBI Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy)

SBI five-year fixed deposit rate 2026

NBFCs cannot accept demand deposits or access the payment and settlement system; no DICGC cover (Business Standard)

IL&FS (2018) and DHFL (2019) defaulted while carrying high credit ratings (Business Standard)

RBI Scale-Based Regulation: four-layer NBFC framework from October 2022 (Business Standard)

Upper Layer NBFCs must maintain CET1 of at least 9% of risk-weighted assets, plus listing and large-exposure norms (Business Standard)

RBI Second Amendment (24 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026): NBFCs with assets of ₹1 lakh crore or more automatically classified Upper Layer, replacing the parametric scoring method (Business Today)

Ready to Invest?

Visit GoldenPi to explore current bond options.
