NRO FDs have similar headline rates, but the actual rate you get post-tax will be significantly different. Here is what you need to know to make an informed decision before you lock in.

What Is an NRE FD and Who Should Use It

An NRE (Non-Resident External) fixed deposit is a savings vehicle for your salary and other earnings outside India. After you remit money in a foreign currency to India, it is converted to Indian Rupees and parked in an FD.

The two things that make NRE FDs attractive:

Interest is completely tax-free in India, with no TDS deducted at all

Both principal and interest are fully repatriable; you can move the entire amount back abroad without restriction

The drawback: to open an NRE Fixed Deposit, you must have earned money outside India, and if at some point you lose your NRI status, the account will be reclassified as a resident account and taxed accordingly in the future.

What Is an NRO FD and Who Should Use It

An NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) FD is designed for income earned in India while living abroad. This may include income from rent, dividends, pension payments, or interest on other Indian investments.

Now we turn to the tax implications. Interest on NRO FDs is generally taxable in India, with tax deducted at source at the applicable rate for non-residents, plus surcharge and cess where applicable. For a basic 30% rate, the 4% health and education cess takes the effective rate to 31.2%, before any applicable surcharge. This is starkly different from qualifying NRE deposits, where interest is exempt from Indian income tax under Section 10(4)(ii). NRO accounts are also designed to hold income earned in India, and RBI rules permit them to be held jointly with a resident relative in specified circumstances.

However, an NRI may be able to claim a lower rate under an applicable Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). For example, India’s treaties generally cap tax on interest at 15% under the India-US DTAA, 12.5% [1] under the India-UAE DTAA, and 10% [1] under the India-Germany DTAA, subject to the specific conditions in each treaty. To claim treaty benefits, the taxpayer generally needs a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) and must furnish the prescribed information in Form 10F.

Latest Bond Updates:

NRE vs NRO FD in 2026: Which Offers Better Returns for NRIs?

<a href="https://goldenpi.com/blog/bond-news/how-to-report-bond-income-in-itr-2-itr-3-2026-guide/" aria-label="How to Report Bond Income in ITR-2 & DCB Bank offers up to 7.50% p.a. [2] on select NRE deposits, making it one of the higher-rate options available to NRIs.

Among larger banks, HDFC Bank [3] offers up to 6.50% p.a. on NRE deposits, with rates varying by tenure, while SBI offers rates of around 6.00%–6.45% [4] on select tenures.

The takeaway is that NRIs can potentially earn more by choosing a higher-rate bank, but the rate should always be compared for the specific tenure and deposit amount rather than by headline rates alone.

NRO FD Interest Rates: What Are Banks Offering in August 2026?

NRO FD rates are broadly in line with the rates offered on comparable domestic rupee deposits. As of August 2026, SBI offers 6.25% p.a. [5] for NRO deposits of one to two years and 6.15% for two to three years, while HDFC Bank offers up to 6.50% [3] on select NRO tenures.

The difference between NRE and NRO FDs, therefore, is less about the headline interest rate and more about taxation and repatriation. NRO interest is taxable in India, whereas qualifying NRE interest is tax-exempt.

NRE vs NRO FD: Real Tax Savings Example

Assume you invest ₹42 lakh for 3 years in an FD at 7%, quarterly compounding, under both structures. An NRO FD would generate the same ₹9.6 lakh, but you would have to lose about ₹3 lakh to TDS, thereby reducing your yield to about ₹6.6 lakh. This conveniently illustrates the most striking difference: despite the same rates, the money you take home varies significantly.

This is exactly why NRIs with a choice (say, remitting savings that could technically go either way) almost always default to NRE and reserve NRO purely for money that’s genuinely earned in India and can’t be routed any other way.

Practical Tips Before You Book Either FD

Don’t assume the highest advertised rate applies to your tenure—rates vary sharply by bucket (1 year vs 3 year vs 5 year)

If you’re going the NRO route, get your Tax Residency Certificate and Form 10F sorted early to claim DTAA relief instead of paying the full 31.2%

Most NRE and NRO FDs pay zero interest if broken before one year, so match the tenure to when you may actually need the money

Senior citizen premium rates usually do not apply to NRI deposits, regardless of your age

Small finance banks often have the highest advertised headline rates, but you should also consider the safety of larger, better-capitalised banks for larger amounts

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the difference between an NRE and NRO fixed deposit?
An NRE FD is designed for NRIs to hold foreign earnings in India and is generally denominated in Indian rupees. Interest earned on an NRE account is exempt from Indian income tax, subject to the applicable conditions for NRE accounts.

Q3. Is NRO FD interest taxable?
Yes. NRO FD interest is generally taxable in India, and banks typically deduct TDS at the applicable rate. NRIs may be able to claim relief under an applicable Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), subject to the treaty’s conditions.

Q4. Which gives better post-tax returns: NRE or NRO FD?
An NRE FD can offer a better post-tax return in India because its interest is generally tax-exempt. An NRO FD may offer a similar headline interest rate, but the post-tax return can be lower after Indian tax and applicable TDS.

Q5. Can an NRI repatriate money from an NRE FD?
Generally, NRE principal and interest are freely repatriable, subject to applicable banking and regulatory rules. This makes NRE FDs useful for NRIs who may eventually need to move their money back overseas.

Q6. Can money from an NRO FD be repatriated?
Yes, but NRO repatriation is subject to prescribed limits and conditions. NRIs should check the applicable RBI rules and documentation requirements before transferring funds overseas.

Q7. Does NRE FD interest remain tax-free after returning to India?
The tax treatment can change if your residential status changes.
