A debenture trustee does not generally guarantee the repayment of the bond&#8217;s principal or interest. Its role is to perform the responsibilities assigned by regulation and the issue documents and to act in the interests of debenture holders within that framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even a secured NCD can result in a loss if the underlying security is insufficient or recovery is affected by competing claims, valuation issues, or enforcement proceedings. So when assessing an NCD, don&#8217;t stop at \u201cIs there a trustee?\u201d There should be a trustee for issues where the applicable framework requires one. The more useful questions are Who is the trustee? What security has been created? What is its ranking? What covenants apply?
