Rupee bonds, whether they are government securities, corporate NCDs, or anything else you have purchased through your OBPP, are still quoting higher yields than dollar bonds. It first crossed ₹90 to the dollar in December 2025, fell to a record low of ₹96.96 in May 2026, and recovered to around ₹95.2 by the end of August. Over FY2025-26, the rupee depreciated by roughly 11% [1] against the US dollar, its sharpest annual decline in more than a decade. That’s a meaningful currency move for anyone holding rupee-denominated debt with dollar-linked liabilities, NRI status, or global diversification goals.

Rupee Bonds: The Yield Advantage on Paper

India’s 10-year G-Sec yield climbed to around 6.95% by the end of August 2026 [2]. The rise reflected growing expectations of tighter monetary policy, elevated oil prices, and pressure from higher global bond yields. AAA-rated corporate bonds typically trade at a spread above this, often landing in the 7.5–8% range depending on tenor and issuer, providing a solid cushion over comparable dollar paper, at least on the surface.

Masala Bonds: The Middle Ground Most People Overlook

Masala bonds sit between the two. Masala bonds are unique in that they occupy a middle ground. They are rupee-denominated bonds issued by entities in India but issued in the overseas capital markets. Coupon and principal payments on these bonds are in dollars, paid to investors at the prevailing exchange rate. This flips the usual arrangement: the issuer has no currency risk, while the investor does.

Under the RBI’s earlier framework, the all-in cost of Masala bonds was capped at 300 basis points [3] above the prevailing yield on a corresponding-maturity G-Sec. Early issuances were priced at relatively high yields: HDFC’s first Masala bond carried a 7.875% coupon [4] and an 8.33% all-in annualized yield, while NTPC’s first issue carried a 7.375% [5] coupon. One important caveat: masala bonds are typically issued under Reg S to overseas investors and aren’t generally available for direct purchase by resident Indian retail investors; they’re relevant here mainly to understand how currency risk shifts depending on structure, not as a retail option.

Dollar Bonds for Indian Investors: Access Points Explained

Access to dollar bonds for resident Indian investors has increased with the establishment of GIFT City’s IFSC exchanges and IFSCA-registered OBPPs, which route dollar bond investments through the Liberalized Remittance Scheme. Recent issuances give a sense of current pricing: ReNew Energy’s five-year GIFT city dollar bond is priced at par to yield 6.5% in January 2026, while SBI has listed dollar bonds on NSE-IX as part of the same ecosystem. For comparison, the benchmark US 10-year Treasury yield has traded in the 4.4–4.7% range through mid-2026, so investment-grade Indian issuers are pricing at a spread over that, with the exact spread depending heavily on credit quality.

<span class="ez-toc-section" 2026: Is the 444-Day FD Still Worth It After the Rate Cut?

Here’s the arithmetic that matters: the difference between a comparable rupee bond and a dollar bond is usually 150-200 basis points a year. If the rupee depreciates beyond that during the holding period, which has happened during 2026, then dollar bond investors have an advantage when converted to rupees; the opposite is true if the rupee holds its value or appreciates. That being said, previous movements of a currency do not necessarily dictate future movements, and the RBI’s forex interventions and swap facilities (which raised over $73 billion by August 2026) can slow or reverse a depreciating trend.

Beyond Yield: Key Risks in Rupee, Dollar, and Masala Bonds

Credit risk: Offshore structures for dollar/masala bonds issued by Indian entities do not shift the credit risk associated with those bonds.

Liquidity: Relatively speaking, rupee G-Secs and large corporate bonds are more liquid than dollar paper or masala bonds listed in GIFT City.

Taxation: Depending on the structure and the investor’s residence status, returns and coupons may be subject to different tax treatments and/or TCS on LRS remittances.

Reinvestment and FX conversion costs: There are conversion spreads when moving money in and out of GIFT City accounts, which eat into any currency gains.

Access limits: The LRS limits ($250,000/year), platform minimums, and Reg S masala bonds restrict how much a retail investor can invest.

The Bottom Line: Choosing Between Rupee, Dollar, and Masala Bonds

There’s no one right answer to this question. It depends on the currency of your future expenses, how much LRS limit you have left, and how much volatility you can handle. For most domestic goals, rupee bonds are the simpler and more liquid option. Dollar bonds would be a better choice if you have a strong dollar liability (for example, a child studying abroad) or if you think the rupee will appreciate and the yield gap will keep widening. Masala bonds, for most retail investors, stay more of a concept to understand than a real allocation decision, given the access restrictions.

Whichever way you lean, run the numbers for your own holding period rather than reacting to a single headline yield or a single bad month for the rupee.
