Two members, Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, dissented, meaning they voted against the majority because they wanted a quarter-point hike.

This was a pause, not a U-turn. The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points in September, its first increase since July 2023. (A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point, so 25 bps is 0.25%.) The hold was widely expected, as markets had priced in less than a 10% chance of a hike.

What did surprise some people was Chair Kevin Warsh’s style. He said he doesn’t believe in forward guidance except in a crisis. Forward guidance is a central bank telling markets in advance where rates are heading. Without it, investors have to guess from each data release, which can make markets jumpier. After the meeting, the odds of a December hike rose to 82.6%.

Why Does a US Rate Decision Move Indian Bond Yields?

Start with how a bond works. Say you own a bond paying 7%. If new bonds start paying 7.44%, nobody will pay full price for yours, so its price falls until its return matches the new offer. That is why yields rise when bond prices fall.

The Fed enters through competition for money. The US 10-year Treasury yield has been hovering around 5%, which is a very attractive, low-risk return for a global investor. The more the US pays, the more India has to offer to keep foreign money interested.

India’s own pressures are adding to this. Crude oil above $100 is pushing up inflation worries, which is a big deal for a country that imports most of its oil. The result so far: the 10-year yield touched 7.44%, a multi-year high.

RBI and Fed Are Both Tightening: The Double Squeeze

Indian investors face a rare situation, with both central banks moving the same way. On 7 October, the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.5% and moved its stance to “calibrated tightening.” The repo rate is what the RBI charges banks for short-term loans, and “calibrated tightening” means rates may rise gradually, step by step.

The RBI also tightened the cash supply. It raised the minimum daily CRR maintenance requirement to 99% from 90%. In simple terms, banks must keep more of their required cash parked with the RBI each day, leaving less to lend or buy bonds with.

That produced a side effect. Overnight rates rose above the RBI’s 5.75% ceiling, and the RBI had to inject ₹1 lakh crore through a seven-day repo auction. It looks contradictory, but the goal is consistent: the RBI wants to keep overnight rates aligned with the repo rate.

How the Rupee and Foreign Investors Fit In

A weak rupee hurts foreign bond investors in two ways. Say a foreign fund earns 7% on an Indian bond, but the rupee falls 5% against the dollar. Its return in dollar terms shrinks to roughly 2%. That is why currency worries often trigger selling.

The RBI is trying to hold the line. It opened a special dollar window for three state-run oil companies and tightened rules on rupee-linked derivatives. The idea is to reduce the oil sector’s pressure on the dollar market.

Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) flows remain mixed. FPIs turned net buyers on two trading days during the week ended 23 October but had withdrawn ₹48,056 crore from Indian equities in October so far. Those are equity numbers, but the same global funds watch the same risks.

What Should Indian Bond Investors Do Now?

Here are the practical points worth considering:

Check your fund’s duration. Duration measures how sharply a bond fund’s price reacts to yield changes. Long-duration gilt funds fall the most when yields rise, so match duration to your holding period.

Don’t read “hold” as “cuts are coming.” Both central banks are leaning towards tightening. SBI Research sees the repo rate reaching 5.75% by the end of 2026.

Remember higher yields also help. Falling prices hurt existing holdings, but new money earns more. Short-duration and target-maturity funds can lock in these yields with less price swing.

Stagger your entry. With two policy meetings ahead, spreading purchases over several weeks reduces the risk of poor timing.

What to Watch Next

Three things matter most in the coming weeks. First, US inflation: core PCE, the Fed’s preferred gauge, is projected at around 3.0% annually in the latest estimate [2], so a higher-than-expected September reading could strengthen the case for further rate hikes. Second, crude oil, which affects India’s inflation and rupee together. Third, the calendar: the RBI’s next policy meeting is 2-4 December, and the Fed meets again in December. The US midterm elections are next week too, though Warsh said politics played no role in this decision.

The Bottom Line

The Fed’s hold was expected, but the message was not comforting: a December hike is likely, and there is less guidance than before. With the RBI also tightening and oil elevated, Indian bond yields may stay high or drift higher before easing. For most investors, the practical questions are simple: how long is the fund’s duration, how long can the money stay invested, and would it help to spread out the entry?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why does the Fed–RBI policy divergence matter for Indian bond investors?
When the RBI tightens while the Fed holds rates steady, Indian bonds face two competing forces: domestic borrowing costs may rise, while stable US rates may limit additional external pressure. The outcome depends on inflation, currency movements, liquidity and what markets have already priced in.

Q2. Which Indian bonds are most sensitive to interest-rate changes?
Longer-maturity bonds generally have greater duration and are more sensitive to changes in yields. Shorter-maturity securities typically have less price sensitivity, although their reinvestment returns can change more quickly.

Q3. How does the Fed holding rates affect the Indian rupee?
A Fed pause can ease pressure on the rupee if it reduces expectations of higher US yields or strengthens demand for emerging-market assets. But the rupee can still weaken because of oil prices, trade flows, capital movements or domestic inflation.

Q4. Can a weaker rupee push Indian bond yields higher?
Potentially. Rupee depreciation can raise the domestic cost of imported goods, particularly energy, adding to inflation risks. It can also influence foreign-investor returns. The impact depends on the extent of depreciation and the RBI’s response.

Q5. Could Indian bond yields rise even if the Fed does not hike rates?
Yes. Indian yields respond to domestic inflation, RBI policy, government borrowing and liquidity conditions, not just US rates. A higher expected path for the Indian repo rate can push government bond yields up even when the Fed remains on hold.

Sources

Federal Reserve – FOMC statement, 28 October 2026

US Bureau of Economic Analysis – Core PCE Price Index

Ready to Invest?

Visit GoldenPi to explore current bond options.
