An investor will get this amount back in full at the time of <em>maturity<\/em>. The only instance of non-payment is if the bond issuing company claims <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/financial-matters\/what-to-understand-about-the-term-bankruptcy\">bankruptcy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The second is the bond\u2019s trading price in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/bond-market-2\/primary-vs-secondary-bond-markets-where-and-how-investors-buy-bonds\/\"><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">secondary markets<\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">. Bonds are traded for a percentage of its face value in the secondary market. For example, if the face value of a bond is Rs 1000 and it\u2019s trading at Rs 990, then the bond price in the secondary market is quoted as 99. Similarly, if the bond is trading higher than the face value of Rs 1010, then the price is quoted as 101.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_factors_impacting_bond_market_are\"><\/span><strong>Some factors impacting bond market are:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Investors who plan to hold their bonds till maturity don\u2019t need to track market value as they will get the principal and interest on maturity. However, if investors plan to sell their securities before maturity, then the market value matters. Some of the factors that affect market value are listed below:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Prevailing_Interest_Rate\"><\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">1. Prevailing Interest Rate<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The market price of a bond varies depending on the value of the <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/fixed-income\/govt-securities\/what-is-a-coupon-rate\/\"><em>coupon rate<\/em><\/a> in comparison to the broader interest rates. For example, if the coupon rate of a bond is 6% and the prevailing market <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/bond-news\/what-are-the-interest-rates-offered-by-nbfc-bonds\/\">interest rates<\/a> rise to 7%, then the price of the bond falls and vice versa.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Bond_Ratings\"><\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">2. Bond Ratings<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bond issuing companies are given a credit rating by credit rating agencies considering several financial factors, including the company\u2019s P&amp;L reports, past performance and repayment history. <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/webinar-leader-speaks\/interim-budget-2024-breakdown-with-crisil-what-it-means-for-your-portfolio\/\">CRISIL<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/bond-news\/how-sebis-2025-move-could-shape-future-bond-returns\/\">SEBI,<\/a> CARE are some such rating agencies. If a company\u2019s rating is downgraded, this affects the market value of that company\u2019s bond prices.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3Age_of_the_Bond\"><\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">3.Age of the Bond<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Market fluctuations in bond prices stabilise closer to the face value as the maturity date nears. This is because the investors gets the face value of the bond on maturity, irrespective of market factors.
