Government, governmental bodies, and corporations may often require capital for the development of operational projects. Instead of going to the bank, they issue bonds for the investors to collect the funds. The retail direct portal of RBI holds the auctions for different securities on specific dates. Notices, press releases, and advertisements are published prior to the issuance to inform the investors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, corporate entities issue bonds based on their necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_Bonds_Work\"><\/span><strong>How Do Bonds Work?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonds are issued with pre-set <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenpi.com\/blog\/sovereign-gold-bond\/what-is-the-tenure-or-maturity-period-of-sovereign-gold-bonds\/\">maturity<\/a> periods, interest rates, and other terms. Once the payment is made and the bond is issued, the investors receive periodic interest payments or coupons at regular intervals (semi-annually, annually, etc.). The principal amount is returned as the bond matures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Bonds\"><\/span><strong>Types of Bonds<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the issuing entity, bonds can be categorised into:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Government Bonds:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Issued by the Central Government of India<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Corporate Bonds<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Issued by companies of different shapes and sizes<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Municipal Bonds:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Issued by local municipalities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonds are categorised into the following types based on the interest rates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fixed Rate Bonds:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The rate of interest remains the same throughout the maturity period.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Floating Rate Bonds<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The interest rate is reset at regular intervals<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Zero-Coupon Bonds<\/strong>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No coupon (interest) is paid; rather, the bond is issued at a discounted price.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Inflation-Linked Bonds:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The principal and coupon are adjusted as per the inflation rate to create a hedge against inflation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will find many other bond names, credit to some unique features, like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Callable Bonds:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The bond issuer can call the bonds, i.e., buy the bond back from the investors before the maturity period ends.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Convertible Bonds:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These hybrid bonds can be converted into company stocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Perpetual Bonds:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These bonds have no maturity period. There is no date for returning the principal.
