Such investments offer investors a consistent and reliable source of income. For instance, investors get <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interest<\/a> in bonds through the asset\u2019s life and get its face value upon maturity. One can buy bonds for more than their face value at a premium or less, which will be more than the discount. Whichever way you buy your investment will change the yield you get from it. The following points are important to understand yields:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stocks:<\/strong> Dividend yield is the total annual share of a company&#8217;s profit returned to its shareholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bonds:<\/strong> Yield is the interest paid to bondholders for their investment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mutual funds:<\/strong> Yield is the net income of the fund.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the yield is the return received by the investor. It has a few more concepts, including the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Current Yield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The current yield depends on your investment\u2019s price and its interest payment or coupon. It changes if the price of the investment alters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coupon Yield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The coupon yield is the annual interest rate established during a bond\u2019s issue. It remains the same for the bond\u2019s lifetime.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Calculating_Yield\"><\/span><strong>Calculating Yield<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the simplest ways of calculating the yield is through the following formula:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yield = (Coupon \/ Market Price of Bond) \u00d7 100<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s assume that the market price of the bond is Rs. 7,000 and the coupon is Rs. 300.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case, the yield will be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yield = (300\/7000) \u00d7 100 = 4.28%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the bond\u2019s market price decreases by Rs. 500, then the yield will be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yield = (300\/6500) \u00d7 100 = 4.61%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, if the bond\u2019s market prices increased by Rs. 500 again, then the yield will be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yield = (300\/7500) \u00d7 100 = 4%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the bond\u2019s price decreases with an increase in the yield, and the bond\u2019s price increases with a decrease in the yield.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrapping_Up\"><\/span><strong>Wrapping Up!<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A yield is a simple concept that can be calculated easily.
