Can Senior Citizens invest in bonds with smaller lock-in periods?

Yes. When senior citizen chooses to invest in RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds, they can opt for early withdrawal. While the actual maturity for maximum investment in these bonds is 7 years, the minimum lock-in period for senior citizens is as follows-

  • Investors aged 60 to 70 years - 6-year lock-in period
  • Investors aged 70 to 80 years - 5-year lock-in period
  • Investors above 80 years - 4-year lock-in period

Add to it the fact that the floating rate bonds interest rate for these bonds is higher than NPS and other schemes of mutual funds, and they can prove to be much more beneficial.
