If you already know what gold-loan NBFC bonds are, the more useful question is how much protection sits behind them and when it thins out. Three things decide that: the issuer’s credit rating, the RBI’s loan-to-value (LTV) rules for gold loans, and the price of gold. Here is how the three interact, using the four issuers on GoldenPi’s gold-backed bonds listing: FinKurve, Indel Money, Keertana Finserv, and Unigold Finance.

Invest NowFour Myths About Gold-Backed Bonds
Before we proceed, let’s shed light on four myths about gold-backed bonds and how to approach them:
| Myth | What’s closer to the truth? |
| “The bond moves with the gold price.” | The listed bonds pay fixed interest on a set schedule, so gold matters through the lender’s collateral, not your coupon. Confirm in each bond’s terms. |
| “Every loan behind the bond is gold-backed.” | Not necessarily. India Ratings calls the non-gold asset quality of Keertana a key monitorable, and CARE flags regulatory risk in FinKurve’s personal loan book. |
| “A rating is a rating.” | Agencies differ. Keertana is rated A- by Acuité, but BBB+ by India Ratings and BBB by ICRA. |
| “Secured means safe.” | Security can help recovery, but it doesn’t remove default or delay risk, and bonds carry no deposit insurance. |
How to Read a Credit Rating on a Gold-Loan Bond
- The letters BBB+ and BBB are different notches, and A- sits above both. Check each agency’s own scale.
- The outlook: “Stable,” “Negative,” or “Watch” shows which way the agency is leaning.
- The date: An old rating may not reflect today’s loan book.
- The agency: Compare across agencies whenever more than one rates the issuer.
- The rationale: This is where the gold story lives: the gold versus non-gold split, asset quality, funding mix, and growth pace.
Here are the four bonds on GoldenPi’s listing as of 29 September 2026:
| Issuer (ISIN) | Remaining tenure (redemption date) | Payout | Security | Ratings (agency) |
| FinKurve Financial Services (INE734I07115) | 21 months (16 Jun 2028) | Quarterly | Secured | BBB+ (CARE); BBB (CRISIL) |
| Indel Money (INE0BUS07CS3) | 10 months (1 Aug 2027); 35 months (24 Aug 2029) | Monthly | Secured | A- (India Ratings) |
| Keertana Finserv (INE0NES07352) | 9 months (16 Jun 2027); 27 months (16 Dec 2028) | Monthly | Secured | A- (Acuité)*; BBB+ (India Ratings); BBB (ICRA) |
| Unigold Finance (INE0O7U07046) | 18 months (2 Apr 2028) | Monthly | Secured | BBB (CRISIL) |
Read across the table, not down one column. Two issuers carry split ratings, and the same ISIN appears with two redemption dates for Indel and Keertana, so check each cash-flow schedule. The tenures also differ, and you stay exposed to both the issuer and the gold price for as long as you hold.
What RBI’s 2026 Gold-Loan Rules Mean for Bondholders
RBI issued its Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions in June 2025 [1], with compliance due by 1 April 2026. They apply to banks, co-operative banks, and NBFCs alike and cover loans against eligible gold and silver collateral for both consumption and income-generating purposes. For consumption loans, the key LTV caps [1] are 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% for ₹2.5–5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. Beyond these LTV caps, the key changes are
- LTV must be maintained throughout the loan, not just at sanction.
- Consumption bullet-repayment loans must be settled within 12 months, although they can be renewed subject to the prescribed conditions.
- Renewals of bullet-repayment loans are allowed only after accrued interest, if any, has been paid.
- Pledged gold or silver must be returned within seven working days of repayment or settlement, with compensation of ₹5,000 per day for delays attributable to the lender.
- Gold and silver valuation and assaying have been standardized, including reference price and purity requirements.

For a bondholder, this cuts both ways. The renewal and bullet-repayment limits help control loan rolling, which can make a book easier to read. But the 85% ceiling for small loans leaves less room for a price fall, and the caps are expected to constrain growth in higher-ticket lending. Bullet loans also mature within 12 months, while these bonds run up to 35 months, so the lender’s book re-prices against gold many times over a bond’s life. Ask each issuer about its loan-size mix and portfolio-level LTV.
Gold Price Stress Test: How Far Can Gold Fall?
LTV is the loan divided by the value of the gold, so when gold falls, LTV rises. This is an illustrative case with no accrued interest:
| Lending at | Fall that takes LTV to 100% | LTV after 10% fall | After a 20% fall | After a 30% fall |
| 85% (cap, loans up to ₹2.5 lakh) | 15% | 94% | 106% | 121% |
| 80% (cap, ₹2.5–5 lakh) | 20% | 89% | 100% | 114% |
| 75% (cap, above ₹5 lakh) | 25% | 83% | 94% | 107% |
| 65% (illustrative, below the cap) | 35% | 72% | 81% | 93% |
An LTV above 100% means the loan is bigger than the gold’s value. Accrued interest pushes every figure higher. Lenders may lend below the caps, so check each issuer’s reported portfolio LTV rather than assuming either extreme. If gold dips and LTV crosses the limit, the lender can ask for partial repayment or more collateral. For scale, Delhi 24-carat gold moved about 4.2% between its September high (₹1,56,820) and low (₹1,50,310) [2]. That is small against the table, but bonds run for months or years.
The stress test doesn’t say an issuer will fail. It shows why the lender’s margin calls, auction practices, and non-gold book matter, and that is where the credit rating comes in.
Five Checks Before You Invest
- Ratings: every agency, date, outlook, and rationale, not just the highest.
- Security: what secures the specific bond and the security cover in the offer document.
- Loan book: gold versus non-gold split, portfolio LTV, and loan-size mix.
- Schedule: redemption dates, payout frequency, and your exit options.
- Platform: buy only through a SEBI-registered OBPP, and verify its registration number.
Gold-Loan NBFC Bonds: The Bottom Line
The gold behind a gold-loan NBFC bond is best read as a cushion, not a guarantee. Who you are lending to is the company. How well that cushion holds depends on three things you can check: the ratings from every agency, the LTV discipline behind the loan book, and how far gold could fall over the bond’s life. The four bonds above differ on all three, so compare them on the numbers and read each offer document before deciding. These bonds carry credit, market, and liquidity risks, and they may suit only investors who are comfortable with those.
Gold Loan NBFC Bonds Frequently Asked Questions
These are debt securities issued by NBFCs whose businesses may have significant exposure to lending against gold jewelry. Investors earn interest according to the bond’s terms and take credit exposure to the issuing NBFC.
No. A bond represents a debt claim against the issuer. The pledged gold belongs to the underlying borrowers and is part of the NBFC’s lending and recovery process; it does not become the bondholder’s direct collateral.
Loan-to-value (LTV) is the amount lent relative to the value of the eligible gold collateral. For example, an LTV of 75% means a ₹75 loan against gold valued at ₹100.
LTV provides an indication of the collateral cushion. Lower LTVs generally provide more collateral value relative to the outstanding loan, while higher LTVs leave less room for a decline in gold prices before collateral coverage becomes tighter.
A fall in gold prices can reduce the value of collateral supporting existing loans. Depending on the LTV, loan structure, and borrower behavior, the NBFC may need additional repayments, top-up collateral, or recovery measures to maintain adequate coverage.
They can support growth in the gold-loan book because higher collateral values can increase borrowers’ borrowing capacity. ICRA has noted that growth in organized gold lending has been supported by strong gold prices.
