CVL KRA is the most trusted source of investor identity in India’s capital markets. If you have opened a demat account, initiated a SIP, or switched brokers, then your KYC is with CVL KRA, one of the five SEBI-registered KYC Registration Agencies. A KRA is a SEBI-authorized central repository of investor KYC records, through which brokers, mutual fund houses, and Registered Investment Advisors can retrieve verified data without requiring investors to submit documents again.
That’s the whole point: do your KYC once, and it travels with you across the market. However, the system has various statuses and deadlines, which can change from time to time and can potentially block a transaction if you’re not paying attention. This guide unpacks what CVL KRA is, how the broader KRA framework works, what your KYC status actually means, and the latest SEBI updates that could affect your investments.

Invest NowWhat Is CVL KRA, and Why Does It Matter for Every Indian Investor?
CVL KRA is run by CDSL Ventures Limited, the market infrastructure subsidiary of CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited). Previously, each bank, AMC, and brokerage managed its own KYC process, resulting in the need for customers to submit their PAN card and address proof multiple times for different accounts. KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs) operate under the SEBI KYC Registration Agency Regulations, 2011 [1], providing a centralized system for storing, maintaining, and sharing verified KYC records across SEBI-registered intermediaries.
Once details are updated by one intermediary, they are automatically updated for all the accounts and folios of the customer. CVL KRA (along with its peers) provides a service to ensure customers do not have to complete full KYC when they wish to invest with new organizations.
The 5 SEBI-Registered KRAs in India (And Where CVL Fits In)
Five KRAs operate today: CVL KRA, NDML KRA, DOTEX KRA, CAMS KRA, and KARVY KRA. They function identically under the same SEBI rulebook; only the operator differs:
- CVL KRA: Run by CDSL Ventures Limited, the most widely used KRA given CDSL’s depository reach
- NDML KRA: Run by NSDL Database Management Limited
- CAMS KRA: Run by Computer Age Management Services, common among mutual fund investors
- KARVY KRA: Run by Karvy Data Management Services
- DOTEX KRA: Run by NSE’s data arm
You don’t choose your KRA; the intermediary you first register with assigns it. But because the system is interoperable, it doesn’t matter which one holds your record. Any SEBI-registered broker or AMC can retrieve it with your consent.
Decoding Your KYC Status: Validated, Registered, On Hold, Rejected
This is where most investors get tripped up. Your KYC status decides whether a transaction goes through smoothly or gets stuck.
| KYC Status | What It Means | Action Needed |
| Validated | All key details (PAN, name, address, email, and mobile) match official databases like Income Tax and UIDAI/DigiLocker. | None—you can transact freely across intermediaries. |
| Registered | Basic KYC is done, but not all attributes are cross-verified against official records. | Portability across new intermediaries may be limited until full verification. |
| On Hold | A discrepancy was found in one or more details during verification. | Update and re-verify details with your KRA |
| Rejected | Documents or details didn’t pass verification. | Typically requires fresh KYC submission—the process can vary by intermediary. |
SEBI’s updated KYC validation rules included the four-status framework, effective June 1, 2024. KRAs now verify five attributes—PAN, name, address, email, and mobile number—against government databases. As of March 31, 2026, CVL maintained 10.33 crore [2] KYC records, according to CDSL’s FY2025-26 disclosures.

How to Check Your CVL KRA KYC Status Online
Checking your status takes under two minutes:
- Go to the CVL KRA verification portal at validate.cvlindia.com
- Select “KYC Inquiry” and enter your PAN
- View your current status: Validated, Registered, On Hold, or Rejected
- If flagged, follow the on-screen prompt to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC or in-person verification (IPV)
How to Update or Modify Your CVL KRA KYC Details
If your address, email, or mobile number has changed, or if your status shows “On Hold,” then the change must be made on your KRA, not on your broker’s app. Typically, the request routes through your intermediary but is processed by the KRA within about 72 hours, after which you’ll get an email/SMS to confirm the update. A few things worth knowing:
- Updates made at any one intermediary automatically sync across all your linked accounts. You don’t need to repeat this everywhere
- Email and mobile number verification is done through an OTP-based confirmation link sent by the KRA, not the broker
- Make sure that your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is up to date, as most re-verifications rely on Aadhaar-based e-KYC
Latest SEBI KYC Rules Investors Should Know in 2025–26
SEBI has been regularly making changes to the KRA framework. Some recent developments:
- Central KYC integration: From August 1, 2024 [3], KRAs became responsible for uploading verified or validated KYC information to the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCRR) within seven days of receiving it from intermediaries. Intermediaries, however, continue to upload and modify KYC information on the KRA system. The integration helps make verified KYC records portable across participating financial-sector institutions, reducing the need to submit the same documents repeatedly.
- NRI/OCI relaxations, ongoing: SEBI has eased KYC requirements for overseas investors, with some of the recent easings including a relaxation of geo-tagging for NRIs undergoing re-KYC (December 2025) and a fresh round of KYC relaxations for NRIs, OCIs, and foreign nationals (August 2026). If you are an NRI investor, it is best to check the latest press releases of SEBI rather than relying on the old deadlines, as the requirements are frequently changing.
- Proposed folio-level KYC gating: SEBI has released a draft circular that says that the first transaction in a new mutual fund folio be blocked until KYC is verified and marked compliant by the KRA. This is currently a proposal, not a notified rule, but it signals where enforcement is headed.
- Regulatory refresh: The underlying SEBI KRA Regulations, 2011 were last amended on February 10, 2025 [4]. However, SEBI has continued to update the broader KRA framework through subsequent circulars and consultations, including several developments in 2026.
The practical takeaway: SEBI is steadily pushing toward Aadhaar/DigiLocker-verified, centrally-visible KYC records, with tighter timing around when a transaction can proceed. If your records have not been altered in a couple of years, it is a good idea to check the status of your records before proceeding with your next transaction.
