Fixed deposits remain one of the most trusted ways for Indian savers to park money safely, and State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, is often the first stop for conservative investors. While SBI runs different FD rate cards, its standard tenure-specific FDs range from 7 days to 10 years. Besides, there is the Amrit Vrishti Scheme, a 444-day FD that offers greater returns over normal tenures. If you’re trying to decide between the two, the real question isn’t “special vs standard”; it’s which specific tenure gets you the best interest for your investment horizon. Let’s break down SBI’s current rate card and see where the numbers actually favor you.

*Includes the extra 0.50% under SBI WeCare for senior citizens on 5-10-year deposits. The 444-day Amrit Vrishti rate is shown separately for comparison; it is not part of SBI’s standard tenure-wise FD rate card.
Notice that SBI’s 5–10-year standard FD rate is lower than the rates offered on its 3-year and 444-day deposits. This creates an inverted pattern across these selected tenures: locking in money for longer does not necessarily earn you a higher interest rate. However, the rate card alone does not reveal whether SBI expects market interest rates to fall; deposit pricing also reflects the bank’s funding needs and competitive position.
What Is the SBI Amrit Vrishti Special FD?
Amrit Vrishti is SBI’s special-tenure fixed deposit for a period of 444 days. Its current rate is 6.45% for general customers. Eligible senior citizens receive an additional 0.50 percentage point, taking the rate to 6.95%, while eligible super-senior citizens aged 80 and above can receive a further 0.10 percentage point under SBI Patrons, taking it to 7.05%. These rates make it a competitive option for investors looking for a deposit with a defined maturity period between one and two years.
Special vs. Standard: Where Do You Actually Earn More?
Run the numbers, and the picture is fairly clear:
- For general customers: Amrit Vrishti at 6.45% offers a higher rate than the standard callable FD options listed here, including the 2–less-than-3-year tenure at 6.40%.
- For senior citizens: If you can lock money for at least 5 years, the 5- and 10-year WeCare rates (7.05%) are marginally better than Amrit Vrishti’s 6.95%.
- For short-term goals: Amrit Vrishti may suit investors whose investment horizon is at least 444 days. For shorter goals, compare the applicable standard FD tenures instead of choosing the special scheme solely for its higher rate.
- For medium-term goals (3 years): The standard 3-year FD (6.30%/6.80%) is still behind Amrit Vrishti, so there isn’t much reason to choose it over the special scheme unless you specifically need a 3-year maturity date.
In short, Amrit Vrishti offers a higher rate than SBI’s standard callable FD options for general customers, while eligible senior citizens may find the 5–10-year WeCare rate more attractive if they can keep their money invested for that long. The choice should depend on the required maturity date, liquidity needs and eligibility for additional interest benefits.

SBI WeCare and Patrons: Extra Boost for Senior Citizens
A few things senior and super-senior investors should keep in mind:
- SBI WeCare adds 0.50 percentage point to the applicable senior-citizen rate for deposits with tenures of five years and above. The 7.05% shown in the rate table already includes this benefit.
- SBI Patrons provides an additional 0.10 percentage point over the applicable senior-citizen rate for eligible customers aged 80 and above. It applies to eligible callable retail term deposits and has certain scheme exclusions.
- Eligible senior and super-senior citizens can also receive their additional rate benefits on the 444-day Amrit Vrishti deposit.
- SBI offers cumulative and interest-payout deposit options. Under its Special Term Deposit (STDR), interest is compounded quarterly and paid at maturity. Under a Term Deposit (TDR), interest is paid at the selected intervals without compounding. Choose based on whether you need regular income or want to accumulate interest.
Which Tenure Should You Actually Choose?
There is no single best tenure for every investor; the choice depends on when you need the money, your tax position and whether you qualify for additional interest benefits. Amrit Vrishti may suit investors who can keep their money deposited for 444 days. Eligible senior citizens with a five-year-plus horizon can compare the WeCare rate, while investors who need access sooner should consider a shorter standard FD. If you expect deposit rates to decline, locking in a rate for a suitable tenure may help preserve that rate until maturity. However, consider premature-withdrawal conditions before committing.
SBI special FD vs. Standard Frequently Asked Questions
No. A special tenure may offer a competitive rate, but the highest rate depends on the prevailing rates across all available tenures. Investors should compare the effective return and maturity value rather than choosing a deposit simply because it is labelled “special.”
For cumulative Special Term Deposits (STDRs), SBI compounds interest quarterly and pays the amount at maturity. For regular Term Deposits (TDRs), interest is paid at the selected intervals without compounding.
Yes. Eligible senior citizens generally receive an additional 0.50 percentage point on applicable SBI retail term deposits. On deposits with tenures of five years and above, the WeCare benefit is included in the published senior-citizen rate. Eligible super-senior citizens aged 80 and above may receive another 0.10 percentage point under SBI Patrons, subject to the scheme’s conditions and exclusions.
A cumulative FD may suit investors focused on building a corpus because interest is reinvested and paid at maturity. A non-cumulative option can be more appropriate when you need regular interest income. The better choice depends on whether your priority is growth or cash flow.
TDS on bank deposit interest is generally applicable when aggregate interest exceeds ₹50,000 in a financial year for non-senior citizens or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens, subject to the applicable provisions and conditions under Section 393 of the Income Tax Act, 2025.
