Things to Consider Before Opening a Union Bank FD
While the interest rate is an important factor, it shouldn’t be the only one. Before investing, consider whether the tenure matches your financial goals, understand the premature withdrawal policy, review the taxation of interest income, and decide whether you prefer cumulative or periodic interest payouts.
| Factor | Why It Matters |
| Interest Rate | Determines the return on your investment. |
| Deposit Tenure | Should align with your financial goals. |
| Special FD Scheme | Selected tenures may offer different rates. |
| Premature Withdrawal | May be subject to reduced interest or penalties. |
| Deposit Insurance | Eligible deposits are covered under DICGC limits as applicable. |
Interest earned on Union Bank FDs is taxable according to the applicable income-tax rules and the depositor’s tax position. Under Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, TDS on bank deposit interest generally applies when aggregate interest exceeds ₹50,000 in a tax year for non-senior citizens or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens.
Eligible deposits with Union Bank of India are covered by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), subject to the applicable rules. The insurance limit is ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including both principal and accrued interest. Deposits held across different branches of the same bank are aggregated when calculating the cover.
